“What better way to celebrate the season of giving than by offering the gift of life to those in need?”

As winter storms sweep through Michigan, Versiti Blood Center is reporting a critical shortage of blood and platelets. Hundreds of blood donation appointments have been canceled due to severe weather, leaving local hospitals in urgent need.

Kristin Brenner, area vice president of Versiti, states:
“The unrelenting winter weather is severely impacting the blood supply in Michigan. We urge eligible donors to make an appointment to donate so our local hospitals have the necessary blood to care for patients in need.”

The need for O-negative and O-positive donors is especially critical, as these universal blood types can help trauma victims, cancer patients, and those undergoing surgery. Platelets, which are essential for cancer patients, trauma survivors, and premature babies, have a short shelf life of only 5–7 days, adding to the urgency.
